While poking around the web I found Colin Mount's 2005 presentation to the Royal Philatelic Society of London entitled "Pig in the Post" (here
). It contained some interesting stories and images, my favorite being this postcard from the U.S. Civil War that satirized Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard as "Boar-egard." In this card, sent to an address in New York, the general is throwing up, well, something--I frankly can't figure out what the last word is. Beauregard was in charge of coastal defenses in Georgia and South Carolina, so perhaps this is a reference to that. Any help out there would be appreciated...
By the way, it is to P.G.T. Beauregard that we can largely blame for the "rebel flag," as he helped create and popularize the Confederate Battle Flag.
